COVID-19 Gender Based Domestic Violence

Gender Based Domestic Violence because of COVID-19

There has been a notable increase in gender based domestic violence at home during the current COVID-19 or Coronavirus Global Pandemic.  According to the Canadian Women’s Foundation (CWF), a woman in Canada is killed by her intimate partner every six days. The Toronto police have noted this significant gap: “Our fear is that there are a lot of women who are experiencing violence in their home and they may not be accessing any services or supports,” “We really want women to know that those services and supports are available, and there are many entry points to getting the services they need.”

COVID19 has shown that there is a 22 percent increase on police calls regarding domestic incidents.  In certain areas, there have also been a 22 percent in sexual assaults.

To get there, we need to hear what is happening behind closed doors.

Her Stories Untold by Traei Tsai

This is a book about an empowerment project regarding diverse women coming into becoming who they are today. This book is intended to capture Women and girls, sharing their journey to inspire themselves and others to look forward to the future with wonder.

The purpose of these stories is to show beauty within the women's struggles, capturing a snap shot of their journey in blooming into who they have become today. It will also explore how they are each coping with the Coronavirus/COVID-19 global pandemic, exploring their experiences under isolation. Traei believes that a story untold is a story unheard. Together, we can empower and inspire women around the globe. Your story is important. Her stories to be told and all the voices to be heard.

"I always believed that it’s not how you start but where you are today.  This project originally started in Vancouver, BC. With the evolving changes we are seeing in the world, it is a critical time to tell a powerful story of stories about women around the globe, from all walks of life." Traei Tsai

CORONAVIRUS / COVID-19 Significance

This is especially important during this global pandemic time. Because of the Coronavirus/COVID-19, women around the globe are experiencing something they have never experienced before. The Canadian Women Organization notes that the gendered experience of coronavirus is grounded in gender inequalities that impact all of us, every single day.

Domestic violence is also prominent during these challenging times. The Economist reports that crime may have plummeted outside but the violence behind closed doors is increasing.

Sharing stories about how women are coping, and finding ways to showcase their success in isolation, is of great significance as this is a changing historical time.

The stories will continue to empower and inspire endlessly.

Don't wait, share your stories now!
